MASS TIMBER IS ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY

  • Wood is 100% renewable.
  • Wood absorbs and captures CO2. The trees harvested for mass timber products absorb and hold carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. When managed forests are replanted, even more CO2 is captured.
  • Building with mass timber reduces the use of materials with a higher environmental impact such as concrete and steel.
  • Better thermal performance. Mass timber structures are cool in the summer and warm in the winter, increasing comfort while decreasing energy use for heating/air conditioning requirements.
  • Lighter structure = smaller foundation.  Wood weighs less than concrete or steel, therefore the foundation support required for a mass timber building is reduced, which lowers both the cost and environmental impact.

  • The International Building Code (IBC) developed by the International Code Council, which is the base for most jurisdictions in the U.S., was recently updated to recognize mass timber as acceptable for fire blocking (IBC Section 703.2 / 703.3 / 721 / 722, ASTM E119 or UL 263 or Section 104.11).
