The Maskwa Medical Center demonstrates how mass timber construction is helping transform healthcare infrastructure in Northern Alberta. Designed to serve the region’s growing needs, the facility reimagines modern healthcare through a warm, human-centered environment rooted in place.
The building incorporates precision-engineered mass timber systems, allowing exposed timber elements to become a defining architectural feature. Natural wood introduces warmth and biophilic character while supporting spaces intended to promote comfort and well-being for patients, staff, and the surrounding community.
The design also incorporates Indigenous cultural elements, acknowledging the region’s heritage and strengthening the connection between the building, the land, and the communities it serves.
Together, the exposed timber structure, cultural integration, and sustainable material approach highlight how mass timber is helping shape the future of healthcare architecture in Northern Alberta.
